Admit why you’re REALLY working out…

Who doesn’t care about the lovely aesthetic side-effects of regular workouts? Who doesn’t aspire to have toned arms and a tapered waist? We might choose to workout for a whole variety of reasons; get stronger, be healthier, lose weight, perform better, but the fact is, the kudos we get when someone points out how well we look, is the real icing on the cake. Okay, so we might not all be aiming for washboard abs and bulging biceps, but be honest, admit that there’s some vanity involved with your fitness regime – and that’s nothing to be ashamed of!

I talk a lot about nutrition for health, skincare for skin health, working out for health, how eating right and working out improves mental health, but I also talk about how good it FEELS to look good. Losing a bit of weight, working on our skin means we smile a little bit more when we look in the mirror. We suddenly achieve that magical yet elusive quality of confidence…

Confidence Triangle

Strength and confidence – interchangeable words, made up of three elements…

The reason I created the confidence triangle, is that for me, it marries up all the important ingredients of confidence. Exercise and nutrition have been a MASSIVE part of my life. As a GB age grouper triathlete, competing at the top level of amateur competition is a massive achievement, but I’ve only got here through years of constant improvement and close attention to how I treat my body. My body is my tool; I look at it as the most precious thing I have and I treat it as such (okay, not quite like china…Ironman is not exactly delicate exercise, but you know, I polished it up well after that…). I know that confidence and a positive mental state is possibly the most important ingredient to achieving some of the things I have done. I’m not always the fastest in the pack, but I will often pip someone to the finish line based on determination alone. I also know, that in order to make sure I get to the start line of my races with confidence, I need 3 things:

  1. Positive mental state – I need to BELIEVE I can do this
  2. Optimum physical health – I need to know I’ve trained as well as I can, fuelled as well as I can and got my body into peak physical condition for the challenge ahead.
  3. Looking good! In order to feel my best, I need to have my best race suit on, my fancy race wheels and tyres (admittedly they do go faster, but it helps that they look bad ass too…) and my bike is super clean and sparkly. I need my cool mirrored shades and my “best” trainers on. I want to make sure my face says my racing is easy, even when it’s not…

I suddenly realised how deeply intertwined these things are and how important they are to becoming successful. In all other areas of my life, these three things have also been instrumental in my success.

Holistic Approach

Why do we so often try and separate health from appearance? Why do we so often separate physical health and wellbeing from mental health and strength? When we visit the gym, our local PT or our beautician, why do we think of them as compartmentalised? The fact is that all these people play a role in improving our overall confidence. The strength coach that helps us get stronger, the aesthetician who banishes our spots, masseur who helps us unwind; they all have a valuable part to play in our lives and all are inextricably linked.

At the Wonder Clinic, I have seen the link between physical, mental and aesthetic wellness. I know how it makes me feel when I eat badly and don’t exercise and I also know from a medical perspective the effect that has on my body including my skin and my appearance. I know from a psychological point of view what effect that has on my mindset too and by helping my clients, I KNOW that this knowledge and perspective is transferable to EVERYONE. You probably now recognise the link in yourself even.

So what I’ve set out to do, is create more than a one-stop-shop, but a holistic programme covering all elements of the wellness I’ve set out here, that will indirectly feed into one another, build on one another and in the end, produce the confidence that is often so lacking in you.

I not only help with your skin health, but I can also help with your nutrition, your weight loss goals, your fitness goals and help you achieve success in all these areas.
