Is that a bit more appealing? Yeah now I’ve got your attention haven’t I…?
Back in the day when we were branding the Wonder Clinic, my amazing designer sat down and helped me think through all the things that were important to me, all the ideas I had, all the things I wanted for my clients, all the changes I wanted to see in the world. One of the most amazing and eloquent things we got to was this acronym. Why?
Well everyone talks about goalsetting. But not a lot of people talk about why it’s required. And when I say that, I don’t mean because you don’t understand that it’s about planning, preparation bla bla bla. I’m asking whether you’ve every really thought about WHY you want to get wherever it is you’re thinking of going?
Body re-composition is a big one. Why? Because we have this preconceived notion that lower body fat means more success. Why? Because the media tells us so. So in our heads, we think if we drop a few inches on our waist, somehow we’ll become irresistible to men and women all over the planet, more people will want to work with us, we’ll get paid more, we’ll end up driving a better car, moving to a bigger house, our Instagram feeds will look a bit better…
…and that’s a really shitty and ridiculous reason to be thinking about healthy lifestyle choices and considering your body fat levels.
One of the big categories within my coaching programme is nutrition – NOT body composition (although that is something I have and still do coach people through when required). Why? Because nutrition is about more than how you look. It’s about how you feel, how you perform, how your body is able to cope with stress and with challenges. It’s a foundation for performance in whatever field it is you’re trying to excel in, be that sport or business.
But I ask people one fundamental question when they rock up saying “I need to eat healthier and get back in shape…”
WHY?
And after a little bit of waffle. I ask them again. And again. And again.
And then after all that, we suddenly begin to see the truth. Because mum or dad was unhealthy and unable to parent well and they want to be a better parent to their own children. Because they feel tired and exhausted and they can’t run a business and enjoy family life. Because they’ve hit a ceiling in training and they don’t want to sit here and stagnate any longer. Because they’ve lost their identity and they want to feel like themselves again.
It’s just one example. Whatever it is you want to do and whatever it is you want to improve upon, it’s a goal because you want to GO OUT AND LIVE your own life. You want to enjoy it. You don’t want to be drowning in all the other shit you have to do. You want to be out there being yourself, doing all the things you dreamed of doing, feeling successful, laughing more, experiencing cool shit!
It all starts with a vision and an understanding of why that vision is there in your head in the first place. When you have that, when you have a firm grasp on your own emotions, you are able to create a vision of your own values. And that my friends, is the most powerful tool when it comes to success. THAT is what will keep you motivated and focused during the hard times, over the long term.
Goals. Go Out And Live.
